From the Inside Out

May 16 @ 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM Free
From the Inside Out dancde workshop for seniors

“From the Inside Out” is a creative exploration of our attitudes and feelings about aging.

Is Aging something you fear, ignore, worry about, are challenged, excited by, or indifferent to?

In this workshop, we will explore how our bodies – with their natural sounds and innate feelings, can become a primary source material for creative expression.

After being primed by simple, accessible exercises done in groups we will make short (30 second to 1 minute) pieces in a supportive environment (to be shown – or not)

ALL YOU NEED IS YOU!

Alexandra-Evangelina Stavrou

Alexandra-Evangelia Stavrou is a dancer/musician, choreographer/composer with over 60 years experience, in both Western and World music and dance. After receiving her BFA in Dance Theater from Tisch (NYU) School of the Arts, she immersed herself in the innovative NYC Downtown scene, as both dancer and musician, developing a repertory of pieces fusing sound (self created), feeling and motion, and pieces embodying forms like bebop and the structures of Minimalist Music. She worked with Jeanne Lee, Jay Clayton, Phillip Glass, Yvonne Rainer, David Gordon, Robert Wilson, LaMonte Young and other figures. She performed music and arranged dances for productions at the Public Theatre.

She has performed and taught in in New York City, at City Center, Brooklyn Academy, and the Kennedy Center in Washington. For years she gave lecture demonstrations throughout the US and has performed and trained in Greece, Indonesia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea, where she was Guest Director of the National Theatre Company. She was a member of “Shango” a NYC based Haitian Dance Company and later, the Balinese-American Dance Company. She became a Hospital Audiences Workshop Artist, dancing and making music with recently deinstitutionalized hospital patients. This was work she really loved and attracted her to CMDE when she returned to the US in the 90’s. Her first job with CMDE was teaching English to six years olds, through dance and music. Since then she has danced the role of The Clown in the Verismo Opera production of”Pagliacci”, performed in site productions in NYC, and performed in works of other choreographers.
