The process for applying for named CMDE gifted scholarships consists of filling out this application form along with financial need description or documentation, and taking an observed dance class as an audition. Candidates do not need to prepare anything in advance. Individuals interested in auditioning should call the CMDE office (201-342-2989) or email ([email protected]) to notify us and arrange an audition. Scholarships cover the cost of one or more CMDE dance classes per week for the 2016-2017 school year (September 17 – June 18). They are for dancers who show potential with financial need.
Mimi Cole Scholarship
for a Gifted Teen or Young Adult
In memory of CMDE teacher/board member/mentor and Martha Graham Company dancer, this scholarship, created by Mimi’s sons, provides unlimited classes for a talented teen or adult dancer who plans on pursuing a career in the dance field.
It is for someone able to take 2 or more classes per week.
Eva Bauer Scholarship
for a Gifted Teen
This scholarship is awarded to one gifted teenage dancer. Ruth Bauer-Neustadter — a dancer, former CMDE Board President, current Board Trustee, visual artist, and one of CMDE’s Founding Director, Shirley Ubell’s first dance students! — created this scholarship in honor of her mother, Eva.
It covers the cost of the CMDE Dance Theater Company
Cliff Allen New Dancer Scholarship
This scholarship is for a child age 6-9 who is new to dance. CMDE alumna Brenda Tobias started this scholarship in honor of her friend Cliff Allen.

Bruce Baker Scholarship
for Boys
This scholarship is given to one boy age 8-18 years. Bruce Baker, a minister, danced for many years at CMDE until he moved out of the area. His parents started the scholarship to encourage boys to dance.
Edyth T. Carfagno Memorial Scholarship
for an Adult
This scholarship was created by Carolyn J. Smith, CMDE dance student and former CMDE Trustee, who was given a gift certificate for CMDE in 1999 by Edyth and her son. This scholarship is supported by family and friends in memory of Edyth T. Carfagno.
It covers one or two classes per week.
Miriam and Luther Smith Memorial Scholarship
for an Adult and/or Child
The family and friends of Miriam and Luther Smith wish to honor their memory. This scholarship is intended to support a child or adult.
It covers one or two classes per week.
Earl Ubell Memorial Scholarship Fund
This fund helps support partial scholarships and work-study arrangements for people who cannot afford to pay full tuition. People needing partial tuition remission and work-study arrangements due to their financial situation should ask for a work study application. Earl Ubell, a journalist and CBS science reporter, and his wife Shirley started the Center for Modern Dance Education over 50 years ago.
