The Center For Modern Dance Education is saddened to announce the passing of dance artist Hsueh-Tung (HT) Chen on June 12, 2022. Born in Shanghai, China in 1947 and raised in Taiwan, HT later moved to NYC to study and pursue a dance career.  He was an accomplished choreographer whose work was a fusion of traditional Chinese and Modern Dance styles, and in 1979 he established the non-profit Chen Dance Center in lower Manhattan.  He met his future wife, Dian Dong, while they were both studying at the Juilliard School in NYC in the 1970s.  Dian began her own dance career as a scholarship student at the Center for Modern Dance Education, and both she and HT remained connected to CMDE over the decades. The Chen Dance Company have been featured guest artists at numerous CMDE events. HT’s contribution to both Asian-American dance and to the larger arts community will be deeply missed.
