short performance and class

The presentation will include an all-levels African Dance class led by CMDE instructor and Ivory Coast native YahYa Kamate, accompanied by additional professional dancer-drummers, and feature  perfomances by the artists with students of all ages including individuals with disabilities along with a short class for up to a dozen in-person participants and unlimited virtual participants. A warm-up will be led by CMDE Instructor Amanda Trott who uses a wheelchair

The live event will take place at the CMDE studio located at 84 Euclid Avenue in Hackensack, NJ, and a live-stream option will be offered via Zoom. People of all ages, including those with disabilities, are invited to attend at no cost.

As part of NJ Arts Community National Day of Racial Healing Events to promote racial healing through the healing power of drums and dance. African dance and drum belong to a much larger global community that keeps us connected through music, dance, and song, allowing us to feel our connections to each other, and a “sense of place” on EARTH.

This event is offered in connection with The National Day of Racial Healing, part of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation’s Truth, Racial, Healing & Transformation efforts, and is supported by the Creating Change Network in partnership with the Truth, Racial Healing, and Transformation Center at Rutgers University – Newark. The Creating Change Network is a program hosted by New Jersey Theatre Alliance and ArtPride New Jersey that aims to build a more equitable, just, and anti-racist arts community.
